At the time, it was the most lavish station built in Canada.<\/p><p>Decades after opening, Union Station is still one of Toronto\u2019s most impressive and functional buildings. But major updates were required to meet modern demands and some original elements needed to be restored.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div><p>The City of Toronto launched a massive renewal project with three main objectives:<\/p><ul><li>improve pedestrian movement around the station<\/li><li>add shops and restaurants<\/li><li>restore the station\u2019s heritage elements \u2013 including hardware.<\/li><\/ul><div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 2\"><div class=\"layoutArea\"><div class=\"column\"><p>The whole project would be complex, but above all, the station had to stay open during construction, accommodating hundreds of thousands of people everyday&#8230;<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-09a017c elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"09a017c\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<h2 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Refurbish or Replace?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-07593e2 elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"07593e2\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p>The building was full of beautiful and unique hardware: sleek, curved door pulls; Working parts were salvaged wherever possible.<\/p><p>Some items simply required refinishing, while others were almost completely recreated.<\/p><p>Casts were taken of the pulls and push rails that are used extensively throughout the building. Most hardware was in the rich brass and bronze finishes typical of the era, and aged over decades \u2013 a far cry from our modern brushed stainless steel.<\/p><\/div><\/div><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-c19127a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"c19127a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 3\"><div class=\"layoutArea\"><div class=\"column\"><p>The methods used to finish the original hardware simply aren\u2019t around today &#8211; like using horse urine to achieve a patina. Having connections that are experienced, creative and dependable will help you overcome the inevitable challengesyou\u2019ll face.<\/p><p>And finally, it\u2019s worth the effort. Preserving a piece of history takes a lot more effort than replacing it with something new. But once these items are gone, they\u2019re gone forever.
