First, it is important to accept that the finish is not consistent from one manufacturer to the next, or even between hardware items.<\/strong> The range can be anywhere from a milk chocolatey brown to almost black.<\/strong><\/p>

There are several factors that impact the appearance of C10B hardware.<\/p>

Oxidization is a chemical process.\u00a0 It involves submerging metal in a chemical solution.\u00a0 The composition of the metal, temperature of the solution and the amount of time the material is submerged can all affect the appearance of the final product.\u00a0 For example, the finish will appear darker on metals with a higher the copper content.<\/p>

Furthermore, material with a steel base must be electroplated with brass or bronze prior to being oxidized.\u00a0 Variances in this process, including cleaning, polishing and other treatments, will also impact the final finish.<\/p>

Once oxidized, items are oil-rubbed.\u00a0 This is usually done by hand and introduces more variables that can affect the finish, like the amount of oil applied and the conditions in which it dried.<\/p>

When reviewing C10B hardware samples, look for compatibility of the appearance rather than an exact match.\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>

Here\u2019s a tip to follow:\u00a0 Place samples about two feet apart and view them from a distance of three feet, rather than placing them side-by-side at arm\u2019s length.\u00a0 This will give a more realistic picture of whether they will appear compatible in the field.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The other big factor about this finish is that it changes over time – what some refer to as a \u2018living finish\u2019.<\/strong>\u00a0 Depending on your viewpoint, this can either be a drawback or part of the finish\u2019s appeal.<\/p>

The oil and oxidization age, wear off and react to the environment.<\/p>

This effect is most drastic on hardware that is touched<\/strong>, like lever handles, pulls, exit devices or push plates.\u00a0 The acids, sweat and chemicals on users\u2019 hands break down the oil and oxidization, exposing the brass underneath.\u00a0 Hardware that is not commonly touched, such as floor stops, hinges and closers, will maintain their original finish longer.<\/p>
